3D Pokemon Enviorment Project!

This is my first 3D environmental project. All Modeling, Texturing, and Lighting were all completed by me using Autodesk Maya and Adobe Substance Painter.

I knew for my first project I wanted to create something with pokemon in mind since that franchise's world is near and dear to me. I also thought it would be a creative challenge to recreate the iconic imagery of the characters and symbols of an already famously established brand.

My early concepts always featured being within a Pokemon Center but I wasn't sure if creating the structure outside would be interesting or if an indoor space would suit better. I opted to design my own indoor layout instead of directly copying past renditions that the brand has showcased through the games and anime because I saw there were many fan-made creations already posted online and it would be another personal challenge for me to think about the architecture and functional design of a Pokemon hospital. So I attempted a couple layout designs while modeling various objects in Maya and seeing if I felt each layout fit the space of a cozy setting where an important service was still being provided. This is where I landed on a two-story loft design of a living space below with a front desk, and an upper platform that anyone could look down from.

My early modeling skills really got to be exercised through the character and object modeling here which I love. Creating Pokemon models of preexisting characters was interesting because I wanted to be accurate to their original designs while also balancing the time limit I had for this project (about 3 weeks). I definitely enjoyed including the additional details of objects like Maghemite's eyes having an etched place in its face where it belongs and also making sure a Pokemon like Roggenrola, with no smooth edges, lacked any curves and looked sharp.

All material assets and texturing was completed through Adobe Substance Painter. This was my first time working with the software and I quickly became fond creating custom materials with the provided presets and adding specific details and roughness that matched what I needed for this project. Custom object like the flooring and table included specific details like minor footprints and flora patterns to give the aesthetic look that I believed matched with a Pokemon center (footprints to showcase the busy space and floral patterns across the marble table to match the emphasis on the symbiosis of nature and humans within the Pokemon series). I specifically loved how the pokeball textures came out! This version is more metallic in nature since its a scientific tool but still captures the vibrant iconic coloring of the brand.

For each rendered image I tried changing placements of each model so you'll see that Magnemites are floating are in different directions and the other Pokemon are moving around the room or reaching spaces that a human wouldn't necessarily be able to easily reach. There's one image in particular of two roggerolas facing each other from one perspective that I tried to mimic the camerawork of a standard Pokemon battle within the videogames. This let me practice staging and choreography within a 3D Space.

I hope you enjoyed this project overview! -Ivan
